Responsible Gambling Guidance

Last checked Independent guidance, written for adults in Pakistan

Short answer

Betting is not a way to make money — over time the arithmetic favours the operator, which is how the market is built. If you choose to bet, set a money limit and a time limit before you start, treat the money as already spent, and never increase a stake to recover a loss. If betting is affecting your sleep, your money, your work or your relationships, that is the point to stop and talk to someone. This page is guidance, not encouragement.

Responsible gambling starts with the arithmetic

Every betting market is priced so that the operator retains a margin. That margin is not a fee you can avoid with skill or research — it is built into the odds themselves. Over enough events, the expected outcome for the person betting is a loss. This is not a warning attached to the activity; it is the structure of the activity.

That has a practical consequence worth being precise about: a deposit is not an investment with a downside. It is money you have already decided to spend, which may happen to come back. Any plan that depends on it coming back is a plan that will fail eventually, and the eventual failure is usually larger than all the earlier successes.

The payments and withdrawals guide sets out the deposit and withdrawal minimums and how the money moves — worth reading before a first deposit rather than after. If money has already been lost to something that was not a bet, report a concern lists what to do in the first hours, and account security explains how those approaches are built.

Set both limits before you start

  • A money limit — a specific number, written down, decided while calm
  • A time limit — how long, decided before you open anything
  • A loss point — the amount at which you stop for the day, no exceptions
  • A win point — the amount at which you stop and withdraw, which is harder

The win limit is the one almost everyone skips, and it is doing real work. Stopping after a loss feels like discipline. Stopping after a win feels like leaving money behind — which is exactly why sessions that started well so often end badly.

Write the number down. The point of writing it is that it was chosen by a version of you who was not in the middle of anything. A number held in your head gets renegotiated. A number on paper has to be crossed out, which takes a deliberate act you will notice yourself doing.

Money that is never available for this

  • Rent or mortgage money
  • Bill money
  • Food money
  • Money for school or medical costs
  • Borrowed money, from anyone, for any reason
  • Money on a credit card or from a loan app
  • Money belonging to someone else
  • Savings set aside for a specific purpose

Borrowed money is the clearest line here. It converts a bad session into a debt, and debt adds pressure, and pressure is exactly what produces the next bad decision. Almost every serious gambling harm story runs through this step.

Why chasing losses is the specific danger

Chasing means increasing a stake to recover what you have already lost. It feels rational — one correct outcome resolves everything — and it is the single most reliable way a manageable loss becomes an unmanageable one.

Two things make it fail. The odds do not change based on what has already happened, so a larger stake is not a better bet; it is a larger bet. And the emotional state that produces chasing is the same state that produces poor judgement, so the decisions get worse exactly as the amounts get bigger.

The practical defence is a rule made in advance: after a loss, the stake never goes up. Made beforehand, it costs nothing. Made during, it is not a rule — it is a negotiation you will lose.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

These are easy to notice in someone else and hard to notice in yourself. Read them as a checklist about your own recent weeks, not as a description of other people.

  • Betting more than you planned, more often than you planned
  • Thinking about betting when you are doing other things
  • Betting to recover losses
  • Borrowing money, or selling something, to bet
  • Hiding the amount, or the activity, from people close to you
  • Lying about wins or losses
  • Losing sleep, or missing work, because of it
  • Feeling irritable or restless when you cannot bet
  • Betting to change how you feel rather than for entertainment
  • Arguments about money at home
  • Having tried to cut down and not managed to

Two or three of these together is worth acting on now rather than later. Not because something terrible is certain, but because these patterns are much easier to interrupt early, and they tend to be self-reinforcing.

Practical steps that help

  • Take a break with a defined end. Two weeks, a month. A break with a date is easier to keep than an open-ended intention.
  • Remove the shortcuts. Delete the app, remove bookmarks, remove saved payment details. Friction is genuinely protective.
  • Tell one person. The single most effective step most people take. Secrecy is what allows the pattern to grow.
  • Separate the money. Keep betting money in an account that has nothing else in it and no overdraft.
  • Replace the time. Removing an activity leaves a gap. Plan what fills it, particularly at the times you usually bet.
  • Track what actually happened. Write down every deposit and withdrawal for a month. The total is usually different from the remembered version, and the difference is the point.

Getting support

If betting has stopped being something you control, talking to someone is the right next step and it is not an overreaction.

Start with a doctor or a qualified counsellor — a general practitioner can refer you, and gambling-related difficulty is a recognised thing to seek help for, not a character question. Talking to someone you trust matters too: the secrecy tends to do as much damage as the money.

If you are in immediate distress, or having thoughts of harming yourself, please contact your local emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. That is not a step to postpone.

Be very careful with "recovery" offers. Accounts offering to win back what you have lost, or to recover funds for an upfront fee, specifically target people who have just lost money. There is no such service. It is a second harm aimed at someone already in a difficult position.

Protecting people around you

If someone close to you is showing several of the signs above, the approach that works is usually the unglamorous one: raise it once, calmly and without an audience, describe what you have noticed rather than what you have concluded, and make clear that you are not going anywhere. Do not lend money, do not cover debts, and do not keep the situation secret from other adults who are affected by it.

You cannot make someone stop. You can make it easier for them to choose to, and you can protect yourself financially in the meantime. Both are legitimate.

Zimmedarana rawaiyya — asal baatein

Betting paisa kamane ka zariya nahi hai. Har market is tarah bana hota hai ke waqt ke saath faida operator ko jata hai. Yeh koi warning nahi — yeh is cheez ki asal banawat hai. Is liye deposit woh paisa hona chahiye jo aap pehle hi kharch shuda samajh chuke hain.

Shuru karne se pehle do limits likh lein: kitna paisa, aur kitna waqt. Saath mein yeh bhi tay karein ke kis nuqsan par rukna hai — aur kis faide par bhi rukna hai. Faide par rukna zyada mushkil hota hai, isi liye acchi shuruaat wali sessions aksar buri tarah khatam hoti hain.

Yeh paisa kabhi istemal na karein: kiraya, bill, khane ka kharcha, school ya ilaj ka paisa, udhaar liya hua paisa, credit card ya loan app ka paisa, kisi aur ka paisa, ya kisi maqsad ke liye rakhi hui bachat. Udhaar sab se khatarnak hai — woh ek bure din ko qarz mein badal deta hai, aur qarz ka dabao agla ghalat faisla karwata hai.

Nuqsan ke peeche bhagna (chasing) sab se bara khatra hai. Ek aham usool pehle se bana lein: nuqsan ke baad stake kabhi nahi barhega. Pehle se banaya gaya usool aasan hai; us waqt banaya gaya usool sirf ek bahes hai jo aap haar jayenge.

Khatre ki nishaniyan: soche se zyada khelna, dobara paisa wapas lene ke liye khelna, udhaar lena, ghar walon se chhupana, neend ka kharab hona, aur kam karne ki koshish ka nakaam hona. Do-teen nishaniyan ek saath hon to abhi qadam uthayein.

Kya karein: tareekh ke saath break lein, app delete karein aur saved payment details hatayein, aur kisi aik bharose ke insan ko batayein — chhupana hi is masle ko barhata hai. Zaroorat ho to doctor ya counsellor se baat karein; yeh kamzori nahi, ilaj ka rasta hai. Agar aap shadeed pareshani mein hain to foran emergency services ya qareebi hospital se rabta karein.

Aur khabardar rahein: "aapka gaya hua paisa wapas dilwa denge" — aisi koi service nahi hoti. Yeh unhi logon ko nishana banati hai jo pehle hi nuqsan utha chuke hain.

Frequently asked questions

Is betting a reliable way to make money?

No. Every market is priced so the operator retains a margin, and that margin is built into the odds rather than being a fee you can avoid with skill. Over enough events the expected outcome for the person betting is a loss.

How much should I bet?

Only an amount you have already decided you can lose entirely, and only after rent, bills, food and debt repayments are covered. Decide the number before you start and write it down.

Why is chasing losses so dangerous?

Because the odds do not change based on what has already happened, so a larger stake is simply a larger bet — and the emotional state that produces chasing is the same state that produces poor judgement. The defence is a rule made in advance: after a loss, the stake never goes up.

What are the warning signs I should watch for in myself?

Betting more or more often than planned, thinking about it during other activities, betting to recover losses, borrowing to bet, hiding it from people close to you, losing sleep, and having tried to cut down without managing it. Two or three together is worth acting on now.

Is it ever okay to bet with borrowed money?

No. Borrowing converts a bad session into a debt, and the pressure of that debt is what produces the next bad decision. This includes credit cards, loan apps and money borrowed from family or friends.

What practical steps actually help?

Take a break with a defined end date, delete the app and saved payment details, tell one person you trust, keep betting money in a separate account, plan what fills the time, and write down every deposit and withdrawal for a month. The last one is usually the most revealing.

Where can I get help in Pakistan?

Start with a doctor or a qualified counsellor — a general practitioner can refer you, and gambling-related difficulty is a recognised reason to seek help. Talking to someone you trust matters too, because secrecy tends to do as much damage as the money. If you are in immediate distress, contact local emergency services or go to the nearest hospital.

Someone I care about may have a problem. What can I do?

Raise it once, calmly and privately, describing what you have noticed rather than what you have concluded. Do not lend money or cover debts, and do not keep it secret from other adults affected by it. You cannot make someone stop, but you can make it easier for them to choose to.

Can anyone recover money I have lost?

No. Offers to win back or recover lost funds for an upfront fee specifically target people who have just lost money. No such service exists.
